In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

My ReviewGW

Where to begin… I have been drawn to the dystopian genre since I discovered The Dwellers Saga written by author David Estes. The worlds these authors create for us makes me question my everyday life. How would I handle the situations these characters find themselves in?

Divergent similar to that of The Hunger Games but I don’t know why but I find I liked it more. I didn’t read this book; I listened to the unabridged audiobook version as I drove anywhere. With audiobooks the narrator makes it or breaks it and this one (Emma Galvin) didn’t do badly at all.

Veronica Roth created a world of factions. Similar to what we all know as labeling of class; high, middle, low or poor. The factions divide the city by virtue; Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Every 16 year old must go through a simulation to determine which faction or virtue they possess the most of.

Beatrice Prier is a 16 year old born into the Abnegation; she has taken a brave step in her life and became a faction transfer. Which faction does she choose? She struggled with this decision for she not only has an affinity for Abnegation and Dauntless but also that of Erudite. This is not common or rather no one speak of it because to have an affinity for 3 factions means Beatriz is Divergent.

I found the characters in the story interesting. Watching them struggle with leaving their past, in the past. During the long process of initiation on the Dauntless compound Beatrice transforms herself into Triss. Her transformation was quite a journey. And mysterious Four, a boy who had guarded his personal life is blindsided by his feelings for Triss.

The emotions in this book are powerful the fear, longing, pain, uncertainty and freedom were so prominent they hand me on edge. It was so face paced yet flowed so nicely. There was so much going on yet not enough.

I cannot wait to see how the movie production comes together; I hope they don’t completely destroy it!
