EB: Tell us a little about yourself, including something people might be surprised to learn.
MM: I’m a stay at home mom to my two precious babies, a daughter age 10 and son age 6. I AM IN LOVE with my kindle (and also to my husband of 18 years, but it’s a close choice between the two of them. LOL.) Something someone may be surprised to know? Hmmm…I love watching MMA fights and screaming at the fighters! I love zombie shows and have a Walking Dead fascination beyond belief. I also have a secret crush (okay it’s not a secret) on David Beckham… SIGH.
EB: What inspired you to become a writer and how’d you get started?
MM: I started writing when I was six years old and haven’t stopped since. Twelve years ago, Rose of Thorne came to me and I began writing it in journals. Over the years, I had never let many people see my work, because I always doubted myself too much. One of my childhood best friends gave me the giant kick in the ass that I needed to take the leap of faith and put this book out there. It has been a dream come true for me ever since then. Sometimes you just need to believe in yourself the way others believe in you. I have never been happier than I am pursing the dream I never thought was possible.
EB: Do you have a good support system?
MM: YES! I am BEYOND blessed with a phenomenal support system. My husband is FANTASTIC, although when I have a deadline, he gets a little grumpy if the house looks messy and he hasn’t seen me leave my office in a few days. My mom is WONFERFUL to help me out with taking care of my kids in order to let me write. I have made such FABULOUS friends along this journey and we all encourage and cheer each other along the way! My teams and fans are FLIPPIN’ AWESOME! I love each and every one of them to death and can’t begin to thank them enough for EVERY single thing they have done and do for me!!! I am a VERY LUCKY girl!
EB: As a reader what do you like to see in a good book? What things do you consider disgustingly cliché, and what makes you toss a book aside in frustration?
MM: When I read a book, I want to see a good griping storyline. I don’t like predictable things, I love twists and turns. Most of all, I want to be able to be able to channel into characters, as if I am experiencing the story with them. A disgustingly cliché to me is always expecting an easy HEA between the characters. And YES I’ve been known to throw my kindle a few times in frustration… Okay A LOT of times in frustration. Even though I love reading them and writing them, cliffhangers get me every time! Also if a character just is disappointing, I have been known to curse it and chunk it across the room. (while it’s in the protective armor of course). It’s funny, I love my kindle like my husband and I also wish I could throw him sometimes too 🙂
EB: Was there any hesitance before you decided to hit the “publish” button for Rose of Thorne?
MM: Yes! I had to sit there and take several deep breaths and enlist some friends to calm me down before I hit the “publish” button. (Alcohol and cursing was involved, too actually, LOL). I think hitting “publish” is like giving birth. You are so excited for the world to see, but nervous as hell to bear your soul to everyone. Honestly, I can’t wait to do it over and over again! Regardless of how scary it is, the thrill and excitement is like no other!
EB: How would you describe your main characters? Would you say they are the same/different from you?
MM: My main characters are blends of people I know.
Skylar is a smart beautiful girl who has had to deal with more than her share of pain, struggles, and grief. She is very unselfish and independent, but also very vulnerable. I am a bit like her in a way. I have dealt with my fair share of tragedies, just like her and struggled through my pain at times. Like her, I kept on going for my family.
Sebastian is a rich young and incredibly handsome man with a very troubled dark soul. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to make peace with his past mistakes. He never dreamed he would be in love with the girl whose life he had ruined.
Lucas is a rich gorgeous free spirit guy who never dreamed he’d ever meet the girl that would change him from his playboy ways. When Skylar knocks him off his feet, he never is the same again. All he wants is for her to love him the way he loves her. I think everyone can relate to Lucas, because everyone experiences this I think at some point when someone doesn’t feel the same as we feel towards them.
I relate more to Kylie, Skylar’s best friend. I love my friends and will protect them at any cost. I am the fun wild one, who loves to let loose and laugh. In reality, she is me.
EB: While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?
MM: When I write, I am that character. In Rose of Thorne, I use multiple POV’s. For each POV I am that character. I tap into and become them in order to really get the reader to do the same when they read. That is how I pull at their emotions when they read my book. That is the experience I want for them.
EB: What is your favorite scene in the novel?
MM: My favorite scene in the novel is the storm scene where Sebastian and Skylar finally come together for the first time. I think it is full of hot spicy passion and also full of deep love. It is the epic moment where everything truly changes for them.
EB: As someone who has read Rose of Thorne I wonder; what were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?
MM: I had several challenges when I wrote the book, but I think that is the case for any writer. Although the book had been written a long time ago, I had to restructure parts of it in order for it to flow correctly. Research- I had to learn things about the city of Austin, TX in order to write a few scenes. As far as the drinking and driving accident at the beginning of book, I have several friends who have lost loved ones like this. Psychological challenges were a little rough for me. Although I can channel dark places, they are sometimes hard to come out of. It’s hard sometimes to write a powerful scene and then come back to a happy place. Sometimes I had to take breaks in writing the scenes to get my head clear again in order to continue working on restructuring a scene.
EB: Some parts in Rose of Thorne can be considered dark, were these scenes hard for you to write?
MM: Actually, no. Dark scenes are not hard for me to write. Unfortunately, I have experienced some horrific tragedies and witnessed some dark days. I tap into that pain when I need to. It helps me emotionally to release some of the pain and allows me to be a better writer.
EB: Who designed the cover?
MM: Michelle White of White Design and Photography designed my amazingly gorgeous cover for me, as well as all my other graphics for my series. I am beyond blessed to have such a phenomenal graphic artist and photographer as a best friend! She is KICK ASS good and I adore her!
EB: Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?
MM: Yes, I do read all my reviews. I won’t lie, the low ones always hurt to read, but as long as it is a true honest opinion, I respect it. I know that not everyone is going to like me or my writing. That is just a part of life. As long as the review is written both respectively and kindly, I value and appreciate it. Criticism helps you become better at whatever it is that you do. Occasionally, when the review is low and it is worded hurtfully, it may sting and upset me, but then I look at all the positive ones and keep on writing. No one will keep me down for long. 🙂
EB: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything?
MM: I wouldn’t change a thing. If anything, I would have not waited so long to pursue my dream of writing. I think the time wasn’t right before, but now everything has fallen into place.
EB: Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
MM: I learned a lot while writing this book. I learned a lot of behind the scenes of the business. So many people go into the actual writing and publishing process than you can ever possibly imagine. Just like when you see an actor in a movie, you never dream of all the behind the scenes people that work on the set. It’s kind of like that. I also learned a lot about myself while writing this. The most important lesson I learned was to just believe in myself.
EB: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
MM: Yes! GO FOR IT!!! Don’t be afraid to put your work out there. The best thing I ever did was network. I became friends with authors and learned the ropes from them. I have found everyone in the Indie industry to be wonderful assets. In the Indie World, everyone helps everyone. We lift up each other, wipe away our tears of frustration, and pimp each other out! We are all cheerleaders for one another! I also keep a journal nearby at all times. If an idea hits me then I write it down immediately. If I don’t have my journal near, I put it in my notes on my iPhone. I never let the idea go to waste!
EB: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
MM: YES!! MWAH!! I LOVE YOU ALL!! There are not enough possible ways I can say “THANK YOU” enough to my readers for just taking a chance on me and my book. Every time I hear from a fan, it brightens my day. I hope you continue the journey with me, as I complete this series, along with others to come in the near future.
EB: Which question are you most sick of answering in interviews?
MM: Honestly, there are none. I love any and all questions I have been asked so far in interviews. Even the ones that are repeat ones.
EB: Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?
MM: Sure! I like to laugh so let’s add a humorous one in there.
Thongs, Bikini briefs, or Granny panties? NONE! 🙂
EB: What are you working on now? (Release date?)
MM: I am just putting finishing touches on Thorneless, Book 2 of Rose of Thorne series, and it is due to release on December 16th!!
EB: How can readers discover more about you and your work?
MM: I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear from my readers!! I encourage them to connect with me!!!
