ExcerptBG

The two men were youngish with beards, wearing layers of filthy clothing. One of them had a face-full of piercings – lip rings, eyebrow studs and a hoop through his nose. They were both skinny and hollow-cheeked with deep-set eyes. As they drew closer, I saw pure hostility in their faces and it took all my strength of will not to throw the truck into reverse and gun it all the way home.

‘What’s your business here?’ the man with the nose hoop called out.

I lowered the window a fraction. ‘I’m a friend of Lou’s.’

‘Lou?’ They took a few steps closer, their weapons still lowered.

‘Yeah. Fair-haired girl with two younger brothers. Lives up close to the compound wall.’

‘I know who Lou is,’ nose-hoop replied. ‘What d’you want with her?’

‘She helped me out yesterday. I’ve come to say thanks.’

‘Get out of the truck and I’ll fetch her over.’

‘I’d rather stay inside till she gets here if that’s okay.’

They stopped a few yards away and talked to each other in low tones so I couldn’t hear. By now, several other gypsies had come close to the wire fence to see what was going on. I’d started to cause a bit of a stir – exactly what I hadn’t wanted to do.

‘Out of the truck,’ nose-hoop repeated, aiming his rifle at the windscreen. ‘Slowly. Hands in the air.’

I hadn’t come here for a gunfight, so it didn’t look as though I had much choice. I would have to do as he asked.

Book Review – Forgotten by Sarah J. Pepper

Forgotten

Title: Forgotten

Series: The Fate Trilogy, book 1

Author: Sarah J. Pepper

Publication Date: October 5, 2012

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

Cover: Wilcoxon Photography (Photographer), Platinum Imagination (Photographer)

Book descriptionBG

His perseverance unnerved me, scrutinizing my every move like a twisted guardian angel. Jace waited patiently for me to join him. Like he knew my defiance would crumble under his intense gaze, which was exactly why I avoided him…until twilight. He hijacked my dreams and proved to be a different kind of nightmare – unhinged, rebellious, and dangerously mouth-watering.
“Escape from reality, Gwyneth. Sometimes life can be too painful to live in, even for immortals,” Jace whispered in my dream. His heat, fervor, and unrelenting confidence resonated around me when he closed the gap between us. His lips hovered above mine, waiting for me to give into him.
***
Gwyneth’s chronicle began long before she witnessed her family being brutally murdered and lost her sight. Living as an orphan, her world is anything but black and white. She sees her vivid future that promises suffering and death. Cursed with these visions, Gwyneth pretends to be like everyone else, until a dangerously charismatic, young man walks into her life. From the moment Jace lays eyes on her, he refuses to believe Gwyneth is normal. He knows information about her past that only a psychopathic stalker could dig up. He reveals her dirty secrets. Unbeknownst details of Gwyneth’s former life unfurl.
Unsure of what to believe, Gwyneth searches for answers that lead to her inconceivable fate. However, the ancient truth she uncovers is more dangerous than any high school romance she’d bargained for. Gwyneth is drug into an inevitable battle brewing between immortal Gods and ageless Hunters – both of which have sworn to swear to kill her if deemed necessary.

I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest, spoiler free opinion.

I will start off my saying that I LOVE the paranormal genre. And Forgotten was so unique.

I will start off with Gwyneth. When she was a child she witnessed her family being murdered and due to the trauma she was diagnosed to be legally blind, though she can see in different shades of gray. Pepper did a really good job with describing the everyday life of someone with such a difficult condition. Gwyneth lives with a loving foster family and tries to have as normal a life that she can. But normal is underrated. She believes herself to be clairvoyant, having dreams that she thinks are scenes of her future. But then her life changes when Jace forces himself into her life. Though she is drawn to him for reasons she does not know or understand she tries to stay away from him.

Jace is a mysterious boy. And I imagine him to be beyond gorgeous!!! At first I found that he talked in riddles as he was trying to get Gwyneth to trust him and to divulge too much information would put her in danger. But he has to heal her and help her remember the life she has forgotten, the love she has forgotten. And the journey getting there was captivating.

I am not going to lie there were some parts that kept me confused however, in the end everything came together.

Forgotten has a lot of twist between the characters. Will the visions from her past affect the present? And of course the incorporation of the fates, I loved Pepper’s vision of these characters. I prefer to envision them as being beautiful than how common Greek mythology describes them to be ugly.

This book is packed with love, hate, vengeance, action and best of all hope! I would recommend this to any paranormal romance fan. I myself can’t wait to read the rest in the series.

About the authorBG

Image of Sarah J Pepper

I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn’t only filled with hugs, kisses, unicorns, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad. Sometimes prince-charming isn’t always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn’t mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?

“Warning: Addictive passion erupts from her mouthwatering descriptions” – recent review.

Sarah J. Pepper lives in South Dakota with her real-life prince charming. At a young age, she fell for paranormal books and now incorporates that genre with romance that thrives in the hearts of us all. When she’s not storytelling, she’s most likely biking, hoarding chocolate, or taking a bubble bath. Get a glimpse inside her head at www.peppersreadingcorner.com

“Forbidden Beloved” – Not everyone falls for the murderous prince charming with killer good looks, but Roxy hasn’t ever been very lucky.

“Devil’s Lullaby” -Cat craved his addictive kiss as much as she ached for his death.

Audible Audio Edition
Listening Length: 11 hours and 11 minutes
Program Type: Audiobook
Version: Unabridged
Publisher: HarperAudio
Audible.com Release Date: May 3, 2011
Narrator: Emma Galvin

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

My ReviewGW

StarStarStarStarStar

Where to begin… I have been drawn to the dystopian genre since I discovered The Dwellers Saga written by author David Estes. The worlds these authors create for us makes me question my everyday life. How would I handle the situations these characters find themselves in?

Divergent similar to that of The Hunger Games but I don’t know why but I find I liked it more. I didn’t read this book; I listened to the unabridged audiobook version as I drove anywhere. With audiobooks the narrator makes it or breaks it and this one (Emma Galvin) didn’t do badly at all.

Veronica Roth created a world of factions. Similar to what we all know as labeling of class; high, middle, low or poor. The factions divide the city by virtue; Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Every 16 year old must go through a simulation to determine which faction or virtue they possess the most of.

Beatrice Prier is a 16 year old born into the Abnegation; she has taken a brave step in her life and became a faction transfer. Which faction does she choose? She struggled with this decision for she not only has an affinity for Abnegation and Dauntless but also that of Erudite. This is not common or rather no one speak of it because to have an affinity for 3 factions means Beatriz is Divergent.

I found the characters in the story interesting. Watching them struggle with leaving their past, in the past. During the long process of initiation on the Dauntless compound Beatrice transforms herself into Triss. Her transformation was quite a journey. And mysterious Four, a boy who had guarded his personal life is blindsided by his feelings for Triss.

The emotions in this book are powerful the fear, longing, pain, uncertainty and freedom were so prominent they hand me on edge. It was so face paced yet flowed so nicely. There was so much going on yet not enough.

I cannot wait to see how the movie production comes together; I hope they don’t completely destroy it!

Nessa Joanne Mulholland, aka Marilyn Monroe’s No. 1 teenage fan, is used to moving house. This time, however, she’s relocating in movie-star style—crossing the Atlantic on board the Majestic, headed for Paris from New York City. And it really would be in movie-star style if it wasn’t for the fact that she’s bringing her cringe-fest professor dad along for the ride (Dad’s specialization: human mating rituals—need Nessa say more?). Oh yeah, and sharing a cabin that’s five decks below sea level and next to the engine room. Still, at least Holly Isles is on board. Yes, really, that Holly Isles—star of stage and screen. Suddenly, things are looking up. Looking a little Marilyn, in fact, because events are strangely mirroring Nessa’s favorite movie of all time, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Watch!

As Holly Isles, world-famous actress, confides in Nessa over mocktails.

Listen!

As Nessa coaches Holly in the amazing “Nessa’s Lesson’s in Love”—the ultimate man-catching rules to finding true and lasting lurv.

See!

Nessa fall for Holly’s too-cute nephew, Marc. . . and

Cover your eyes!

As it all goes terribly, horribly, embarrassingly wrong.

There’s no doubting it. This is going to be one pitchy crossing.

Blond2

Book descriptionGW

Nessa Joanne Mulholland, aka Marilyn Monroe’s No. 1 teenage fan, is living the high life in Manhattan. Literally. Waffling and pancaking it up every morning (care of housekeeper Vera) in her soon-to-be stepmother’s Tribeca penthouse apartment. Things couldn’t be better. Or so she thinks, until things start to go terribly, horribly wrong, in true Nessa fashion. All of a sudden, she’s starting to feel the need to pull at her collar. Yes, it’s summer in NYC and things are heating up fast, including the professor and Holly’s wedding plans.

Gasp!

Along with Nessa as her dad’s too-gorgeous research assistant moves into the new family penthouse while Holly’s away filming in LA . . .

Cringe!

As Nessa gets dumped for “Doris Day” . . .

Hiss!

As Kent Sweetman decides he wants Holly back, wedding or no wedding . . . and

Bite your nails!

As the cupcakiest wedding ever hangs in the balance.

Phew! The temperature’s getting hotter by the second, heat rash is setting in fast—and everyone’s starting to scratch that Seven Month Itch!

Blond3

Book descriptionGW

Nessa Joanne Mulholland, aka Marilyn Monroe’s No. 1 teenage fan, is about to become a big sister—twice over. Her movie-star stepmother, Holly, is very pregnant with twins when, suddenly, B and G (that’s Boy and Girl) decide they need to get away from it all.

Within hours, Nessa, her dad, Holly, her best friend Alexa, and tag-along cousin Nat are on a private jet and headed for some rest and relaxation Hawaiian style. Except that, on hitting the sand, there’s not a lot of rest and relaxation to be found. The penthouse apartment they’ve booked is suddenly unavailable, Holly’s blood pressure skyrockets, Nat is bronze-beach-boy crazy, and what’s with the three cute guys living upstairs?

Laugh!

At Nat’s crazy antics (will Nessa and Alexa really have to chain her to the apartment balcony to keep her out of boy trouble?)

Cry!

When Nessa meets someone who’s had the life-saving operation her mother couldn’t have.

Sigh!

As two gorgeous babies make their way into the world . . . and

Applaud!

As Nessa finally gets things right . . . for once.

 excerpt GW

Diamonds Are a Teen’s Best Friend

“Is this the boat to Europe, France?”

Honestly, I tried to stop myself from asking the question, I truly did. In front of me, the porter guy looks at me as if I’m a thirteen (almost fourteen!)-year-old idiot. Beside me, dear old Dad looks at me as if I’m delusional (that’s because a lot of the time he actually thinks I am—he’s even had me tested to make sure I’m not). And he’s about to open his mouth to start in on me (again . . . sigh) when, behind me, I hear it—someone laughs. Right on cue.

I swing around quickly, my head zipping from side to side, trying to see who it is, but it’s practically impossible in this traffic jam of a crowd, especially when you’re as short as I am and your dad won’t let you wear a kitten heel, let alone rhinestones in the daytime. I bet Marilyn Monroe’s mother never said a thing about Marilyn wearing rhinestones in the daytime. Then again, Marilyn Monroe’s mother let her get married at sixteen and spent a great deal of time in a mental institution, so that’s probably not saying very much. I’m just about to give up on the searching thing when the crowd parts and someone dressed entirely in red, going out/in/out (in all the right places) and hips swaying, passes me by with a wink and a lift of one perfectly arched eyebrow.

“Honey,” she says, in the kind of voice that makes everyone turn and look at her. “France is in Europe.”

Oh. My. God.

It’s one of those moments when you just know you’ll think up a zillion and two perfect things to say later, but instead you stand there looking like you’ve recently had a lobotomy. Especially when I realize that the someone is actually a Someone and that the woman now heading up the escalator to the biggest ship I’ve ever seen in my life is, in fact, Holly Isles.

Yes, the Holly Isles.

Actress. Goddess. Star of stage, screen and various tabloid magazines that you skim as fast as you can at the supermarket checkout because your dad will never let you buy them, Holly Isles.

Someone whistles. And this time, I don’t need to look around. This time, I know for sure it’s not for me. (Laughing, sure. Whistling? I am sincerely doubting it . . .) And because I don’t turn around, I don’t move for the guy. The one who smacks into my shoulder and says, “Excuse me. I need to get to my aunt.”

I follow his gaze directly up the escalator to Holly. His aunt? Holly is his aunt? Well, la de da. I go to give him my best “Get your filthy mitts off me, don’t mess with the outfit and don’t go anywhere near the hair, buster” look when my mouth drops even further. Hello, sailor! Cute boy ahoy! This guy is definitely related to Holly in a big way.

“Ah . . .” my dad exhales, the lecture he’d been working on giving me obviously forgotten. Funny, but he’s got the same kind of lobotomy look as me. And he’s staring straight at Holly.

It takes me a moment to get over the shock. When I finally do, my eyes move back from my dad to Holly’s form as she goes up, up, up (and I’m not alone, I think everyone on the dock is watching Holly go up, up, up). Slowly, I shake my head from side to side. I can’t believe it. I can’t believe Holly Isles just said that to me. And it wasn’t exactly the line from the movie I was thinking about, but then again, neither was mine. And I could probably go on watching her forever, my mouth hanging open (okay, so I only check out her nephew a few more times), except that Holly’s now out of sight and my dad has obviously returned to his old lecturing form.

“Nessa Joanne Mulholland.”

“Mmmm.”

“NESSA JOANNE MULHOLLAND!”

“Huh?” I finally look up, only to see him looking down at something. At my chest. Ugh. Gross. What is he doing? He’d better not be doing any research on me. But then I look down too.

Oops. The tissues are escaping again.

I surreptitiously stuff them down my black-with-leopard-skin-trim top with one hand. “I’ve got a cold, okay?” I mutter. Geez. So much for Marilyn’s mother. I bet she never had to put up with this kind of harassment from her father, either. Except that no-one was ever quite sure exactly who he was. And, of course, Marilyn didn’t need to stuff, either, did she?

I sigh my second sigh of the morning. Life. It’s just so . . . unmovielike.

Book Review – Atancia by Wren Figueiro

Atancia

Book descriptionBG

Publication Date: August 6, 2013

After watching a young boy die, college freshman Atancia Clark begins to have panic attacks. Her heart flutters, her breath catches and she can’t control her emotions the way she always has. She wants to be strong, but lately she just hasn’t been living up to her own expectations. When she meets Ben Althaus, her breath starts catching for entirely different reasons. He helps Atancia discover the cause for her odd emotional reactions and the history she thought was lost when her mother left her. Atancia has power beyond that of an average girl, and Ben is by no means ordinary. He wants to help her hone her talents, but her focus is threatened by life-altering events. Add Ben’s entrancing brother, Matthew, to the mix, and Atancia’s lack of clarity could lead her down a destructive path.

Atancia is a paranormal romance novel for young adults. It is the first book of The Durand Duology.

~~~~~
Atancia was a unique story and I really enjoyed it. We are introduced to the world of the Durand, beings who have been cohabitating with humans but who have special powers. Atancia (Atty) Clark is a Durand though she knows it not. She doesn’t know anything about her family history as her mother left her when she was just a child for her own protection. What does she need to be protected from? Well you’ll just have to read it to get the full details! 😉
Atty is shy private girl but her life will change drastically when Ben walks into her life.  Finding out about her mother and who she really is Atty’s main goal but with her adopted grandmother, Nana falling ill, she runs away and tries to put it all behind her. Atty’s has many questions but she never really gets answers. The only person she can talk freely to is Matt, Ben’s younger brother. However, she feel’s guilty for trusting in him and not the man she loves.
For a debut novel I must give major props to Wren Figueiro. Atancia is filled with so many emotions that keep you turning the page. It has mystery, grief, sorrow, love, many twists and most of all, the unknown. In my opinion Atancia is a story of self discovery, a story of how someone learns to trust their instincts. It’s a hard road to take especially if with all your heart you want to believe the people who claim to care about you.
“Sometimes you have to kind of die inside in order to rise from your own ashes and believe in yourself and love yourself to become a new person.” ― Gerard Way
This looks like a promising series and I am excited to find out what happens next!
About the authorBG
As a child, I was often kept up at night by an overactive imagination. When I got to college, I decided to study writing so I could put that imagination to better use. I am an avid reader and rarely let a week go by without finishing at least two books. I love the way that books allow passage into other people’s thoughts and let me see how they view the world. Though I have been writing stories as long as I can remember, Atancia is my first novel.
